December 12, 2019 – December 23, 2019
As APIA (the Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association) begins the first year of their new three-year language initiative with support from ANA (the Administration for Native Americans), the WAYK team returns to Atka for 10 days of sessions in the winter of 2019. This new project is a continuation of their ongoing efforts to build a new generation of Unangam Tunuu speakers and focuses, as always, on proficiency development, in addition to creating community-based standards for language teacher certification.
During this visit, the WAYK team will provide additional training and support for members of the local core team who attended previous WAYK workshops and participated in our 2016 and 2018 Summer Intensives. WAYK will continue to support these core team members as they implement language curriculum in the local school. We will also work with small groups of learners and speakers of Niiĝuĝim Tunuu, in an effort to refine existing lessons and curriculum, develop new lessons, enhance teaching skills, and increase the team’s fluency.
