February 2025 Visit to the Treehouse at GNN

The WAYK team returns for a visit to the Treehouse at GNN in February and early March of 2025. Our ongoing collaboration with the Treehouse’s Bak̕wa̱mk̓ala Language Program brings us back to Port Hardy, BC. We will be at the Treehouse for a three-week visit this winter. We’ll be with the Treehouse team from February 7th-14th, 2025 and again from February 24th-March 7th, 2025.

The Treehouse runs concurrent Certificate and Diploma courses as part of their full-time adult immersion program. In September 2024, they welcomed a 3rd cohort of Certificate students and their 1st cohort of Diploma students. This program runs in partnership with GNN (Gwa’sala ‘Naxwada’xw Nations) and Simon Fraser University’s Indigenous Languages Program. The current program at the Treehouse builds upon many years of ongoing efforts throughout the region to develop new Bak̕wa̱mk̓ala speakers. The full-time program focuses on proficiency development through language immersion.

The WAYK team will continue to work with the core team, guest learners and speakers, and the current cohorts of learners. Our goal is to provide additional training and support for all participants, support existing activities and develop new lessons.
