September 2024 Program Launch at the Treehouse

The WAYK team returns for a visit to the Treehouse at GNN in fall 2024. Our ongoing collaboration with the Treehouse’s Bak̕wa̱mk̓ala Language Program brings us back to Port Hardy, BC. We will be at the Treehouse for four weeks in August and September 2024 as they launch the new cohorts of their adult immersion program.

The Treehouse runs concurrent Certificate and Diploma courses as part of their full-time adult immersion program. This September they will welcome a 3rd cohort of Certificate students and their 1st cohort of Diploma students.  This program runs in partnership with GNN (Gwa’sala ‘Naxwada’xw Nations) and Simon Fraser University’s Indigenous Languages Program. The current program at the Treehouse builds upon many years of ongoing efforts throughout the region to develop new Bak̕wa̱mk̓ala speakers. The full-time program focuses on proficiency development through language immersion.

The WAYK team will continue to work with the core team, guest learners and speakers, and the current cohorts of learners. Our goal is to introduce the methodology to the new Certificate cohort starting this fall and provide additional training and support for all participants.
